According to a study published by personal finance website WalletHub, South Carolina residents pay $821 in real estate taxes on an average-priced home and $651 in vehicle taxes based on a car value of $24,000.

That ranks the Palmetto State as the sixth most affordable state for property taxes but 48th for vehicle taxes.

A typical American household pays $2,197 in real estate property taxes, while states that collect vehicle property taxes receive an average of $436 from residents.

South Carolina is one of 27 states that collect vehicle property taxes.

The Greenville News reports that Greenville County budget documents show it expects to collect $93.89 million in property taxes in fiscal year 2018.

The Wallethub article notes that $14 billion in property taxes go unpaid annually, according to the National Tax Lien Association.
