SCACPA took time this month to catch up with Converse College student and SCACPA member Celeste Stewart. Read on to hear Celeste voice how SCACPA has supported her plans and helped her reach her goals thus far as a future South Carolina CPA.

Tell me about when and why you joined SCACPA? How did you hear about us?

A colleague and I had a conversation one day about SCACPA and decided to attend the info session at Converse College in fall of 2018. We went to the session and heard about the great opportunities available in the field of accounting. Immediately, and without hesitation, I joined. CEO Chris Jenkins and the guest speakers were such an inspiration to me.

What is your major and what are your career plans?

I am double majoring in music and accounting. My plans are to attend grad school in preparation to sit for the CPA exam. In five years along with having my CPA, I would sit for the CMA as well. I plan to become a manager for one of the Big Four CPA firms making a positive lasting impact on the development of the firm.

How has your SCACPA membership been beneficial to you in reaching your goals thus far?

As a member of SCACPA I am able to access the same professional online development courses, attend the same chapter social events and–my favorite—receive the same SCACPA print publications as the Association’s full CPA members. These outlets help me learn about current topics in the field of accounting. Also, as a student member I am eligible for multiple CPA exam prep discounts through SCACPA partnerships. This will play an essential role in me passing and paying for the exam.

What has been your favorite SCACPA event?

All of SCACPA events plays a major role in networking, by far my favorite event was Fall Fest back in November. The ability to connect and network with peers, CPAs, vendors and guest speakers was the highlight of the event. The guest speakers were very engaging. Discussing various topics such as interview etiquette, making yourself stand out of the pile of resumes, and learning the process of the CPA exam were all invaluable to me.

What would you say to your fellow accounting students to encourage them to join SCACPA?

College students love the word ‘free’! The student membership is free. There are so many opportunities that SCACPA has to offer to enhance our career focus. It doesn’t get better than connecting with potential employers, scholarship opportunities and the invaluable feeling of being a part of something bigger than yourself.
