  • It’s June, have you renewed your dues for SCACPA’s 2020-21 membership year? The new membership year begins July 1, so be prepared for all the benefits SCACPA has to offer. You should have recently received your dues renewal packet in the mail, which includes your 2020-21 membership card and the “Grow Your Association” pamphlet.   • This Wednesday is last call for our 2020 Membership Survey, and when you complete the survey you can elect to be entered into a drawing to win one of three a $100 Visa gift cards. We are looking forward to reviewing the responses from members and non-members.   • Throughout June, we are featuring an incredible selection of CPE, including our planned in-person Spring Splash tracks of Business and Industry, Government, Nonprofit, Ethics and Variety. SCACPA is committed to delivering livestream CPE to you at your location with these additional selections, as we bring you more than 30 online courses for more than 65 hours of learning.

  • The June calendar keeps growing with two new Tax courses announced for Wednesday, June 24:  “Catching Up on Cost Segregation: A Current Look at Accelerated Property Depreciation” (LITX62) and “1031 Property Exchanges via Passive Ownership – Capital Gains and Depreciation Recapture Deferral” (LITX63).
  • If you’ve already used all your 2019-20 CPE Bank, you can start registering for our June courses once you renew by tapping your 2020-21 CPE Bank.
  • ATTENTION STUDENTS: Our deadline for Student Scholarships has been extended to June 30. Did you know SCACPA awarded more than $40,000 in student scholarships last year? Awards are intended for juniors, seniors and graduate students, and amounts can range from $500 to $2,500. Apply today!
  • SAFETY FIRST, BE PREPARED: Hurricane season has arrived, make sure you review South Carolina’s 2020 Hurricane Guide. It is update with precautions to remember should evacuations become necessary amid COVID-19 guidelines.

Advocate

  • The Governmental Affairs Committee, chaired by former SCACPA president Cheryl Lang, CPA, met via online conferencing with the Department of Revenue and the Board of Accountancy last week. SCACPA thanks our regulatory partners for all their hard work, and watch SCACPA communications news and updates as it is our hope some form of Conformity can be passed in September.
  • Stay informed with our weekly View From the Dome newsletter on what happened as the Sine Die resolution was passed. The governor’s accelerateSC committees have passed along their recommendations, follow our coverage as South Carolina judiciously reopens for businesses.
  • SCACPA is the only organization in the state that protects and promotes the CPA profession. We’re promoting our #WhyCPA campaign to spread awareness about the differences between an accountant and a CPA, and why choosing a CPA is a smart long-term financial decision. We know choosing a CPA is the right decision, don’t you?
  • SCACPA’s online interview with South Carolina Department of Employment and Workforce Chief Administrative Officer Jamie Suber regarding your questions about online filing has nearly 2,800 views on YouTube. Continue to post your comments and follow-up questions on SCACPA Connect, and we will work to get you answers. Your membership elevates SCACPA’s ability to vocalize your needs and protect your interests through communicating with our regulatory partners in times of change.

  • Upcoming Livestream Alert: SBA Form 3508 and PPP Loan Forgiveness. Join us for the latest in SCACPA just-in-time COVID-related CPE. Learn safe harbors and exposure to losses for your clients. Interpreting SBA guidance on this issue is a bit like playing dodgeball while not getting lost in a maze.   • All Virtual Spring Splash courses have been reconciled and you should have received your certificates. If you still have questions about your Virtual Spring Splash credits, contact the SCACPA staff at 803.791.4181.
  • Thank you to the more than 200 of you registered for the full two-day, two tracks of learning Virtual Spring Splash, and that number goes past 400 when we count how many of you attended individual sessions. To deliver a side-by-side Tax track and A&A track required us for the first time in SCACPA history to deliver content on simultaneous classrooms, and we adjusted on the fly and made the experience work for everyone.   • SCACPA is an IRS-approved provider for our tax CPE classes. Watch for more announcements and updates as we enter the 2020-21 CPE season starting July 1 with the new membership year.
  • SCACPA’s CPE Committee of 16 met (via online conferencing) to put the finishing touches on the 2020-21 CPE schedule, which will be unveiled as part of our membership dues renewal period.

  • SCACPA’s Annual Member Meeting was held via livestream on Monday, May 18. Thank you to all members who attended and participated. Attendees voted on the new slate of board members and officers, reviewed the Association’s annual budget and heard reports on SCACPA’s activities and more.
