When it comes to properly learning about how to comply with tax laws, it makes sense for your teacher to be the South Carolina Department of Revenue.
The SCDOR offers a wide range of workshops and seminars throughout the year.
Free two-hour workshops include “Sales Tax 2018” and “Employer Withholding Tax 2018.” These are ideal for business owners and accounting personnel, and the workshops can count toward continuing education credit. Topics include filing requirements, registration instructions, and directions for how to complete online payments. This PDF brochure has a list of in-class sessions and webinar dates, as well as instructions for how to register.
The DOR’s “Sales and Use Tax Seminars” provide updates based on legislative trends and taxpayer requests, and they are suitable for business managers, CFOs and those who work in accounting or accounts payable. These seminars begin with a “Series Preview and Legislative Updates” session on March 1 at the Columbia Conference Center. Seminars are then hosted throughout the state until October and are offered with industry-specific information for:
- Educational Institutions
- Restaurant and Bar Industry
- Government and Municipalities
These seminars include audience Q&A opportunities with knowledgeable SCDOR staffers. Check here for a list of dates and sites for these seminars, as well as information on how to register. These seminars require a $50 fee and are eligible for continuing education credit.

The SCDOR also offers a page of instant access Taxpayer Education tutorials. You can learn the basics of Accommodations Tax, Corporate Tax, Sales & Use Tax, and General Business Filing. And afterward, when you unwind with a glass of wine, you can thank the businesses who followed the Wine Importer/Producer Filing Requirements.
