Tuesday, April 17, the IRS’ Modernized eFile and Direct Pay services went down, leaving CPA tax practitioners and taxpayers scrambling on the last day of filing season. A number of other services, including Get Transcript, were also down. However as of 5:00pm ET Tuesday, all services were up and working normally.

In recognition of the inconvenience to taxpayers, the IRS has taken the rare step of extending the payment deadline by one day. Taxes now must be filed no later than midnight, April 18. This is an automatic extension and requires no extra steps or special action.
