Those who owe more than $51,000 in back taxes, penalties and interest could be danger of having a valid passport, according to the IRS as it implements new procedures.

The State Department can deny a passport application or renewal, and in some cases revoke a passport, as part of the

Fixing America’s Surface Transportation Act of Dec. 2015.

For the IRS not to notify the State Department, delinquent taxpayers should either pay their total in full or agree to a repayment plan.
