JOB DESCRIPTION FOR: Controller
REPORTS TO: Chief Financial and Chief Operating Officer (CFO/COO)
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES: General responsibilities are to perform the day-to-day accounting processes and assist in the development, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of accounting operations of The Citadel Foundation, The Citadel Real Estate Foundation, and The Citadel Brigadier Foundation. The position reports directly to the CFO/COO.
SPECIFIC DUTIES:
- Work with the CFO/COO to evaluate, establish, organize, and maintain accounting and related operational policies, procedures, and controls.
- Responsible for maintaining the General Ledger and sub-ledger systems, including detailed posting, reconciliations, and closing processes in support of accurate, timely, and consistent financial reporting.
- Provide required information for the annual audits to ensure timely, accurate, and clean audit results.
- Develop, monitor, and maintain internal control procedures and ensure compliance with regulations.
- Assist the CFO/COO with the Foundation’s annual budgeting process and create monthly reporting to senior staff.
- Assist CFO/COO with financial statement preparation and reconciliations.
- Prepare data for IRS Form 990 filings for the Foundation and affiliated entities.
- Assist the CFO/COO in reporting and providing support to the Foundation’s Board of Directors and associated committees.
- Provide accurate accounting of split-interest agreements to include CRUTs, CRATs, and CGAs.
- Prepare and maintain fixed-asset accounts and depreciation schedules.
- Implement and monitor records retention, security, and privacy policies.
- Assist CEO and CFO/COO with strategic modeling.
- Provide fund balances, NACUBO, and other reports to campus entities.
- Other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Minimum of five years of work experience in nonprofit accounting, finance, or a related field
- Maintain an active Certified Public Accountant license
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education
- Strong communication skills (written and oral) and listening skills
- Strong organizational and interpersonal skills
- Fund Accounting
- Experience with accounting-specific software (Quick Books, Financial Edge, etc.)
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Seven or more years of direct experience in nonprofit accounting, preferably in a higher education setting
- Blackbaud Raiser’s Edge and Financial Edge experience
- Familiarity with The Citadel and affinity for its mission
