Highlights:
Specific Areas Covered: " Analyzing nexus: Where do I need to file, why, and how can I explain this to my clients or my CFO? Where should I register, de-register? What happens if I encounter a problem? This will include a detailed discussion of how to perform a nexus analysis and what to do with the results. We will also speak to the firms and the companies about the value of these services, and how to bill (or pay) for that value. " Sales tax function analysis: Does my company or my clients have refunds out there? How would I go about obtaining them? What are the risks/rewards? What are the benefits to practitioner and company? This will include a detailed discussion of how to perform a sales tax refund analysis and what to do with the results. We will also speak to the firms and the companies about the value of these services, and how to bill (or pay) for that value. " Property Tax. We will discuss strategies for dealing with property taxes, from both a consultant's point of view, and a client's perspective. " Audit Defense. We will discuss audit defense strategies, including specific ideas, tactics, and knowledge required to get through audits as pain-free as possible. " Overall Approach: The overall approach would be to utilize a standard lecture (with technology/participation) as well as several hands-on cases. When finished, each participant will have performed a simple nexus study and a simple sales and use tax refund analysis. " Technology: I use "clicker" technology which allows the audience to be polled on questions and to submit feedback throughout. I would also propose to use "Prezi" for a portion of the presentation (in addition to PowerPoint) which would allow me both to present the technical topic and by reference introduce the Prezi tool as a very unique alternative to PowerPoint.

Description:
The content is applicable to both small firms looking to provide state tax services to clients, or to companies looking to make their tax departments more functional in the state tax arena. The presentation will focus on providing several basic state tax services/functions that can add value for both practitioners and companies. Some examples include sales tax refund analysis, nexus studies, managed compliance, managed audits, and self-audits. The main idea will be to de-mystify certain state tax functions so small/mid-sized firms and companies understand how they can perform these services on their own.
